62% of respondents from a 2017 survey conducted by ISACA experienced a RansomWare attack in the previous year. Maritime cyber attack cases are on the rise and it is easy to understand why: maritime companies often carry large sum of valuables and money, making it attractive for cyber criminals to compromise its systems for ransom and theft.
Despite the worrying number of cases, maritime companies are not taking proper measurements on security. Ships and offshore units are now seeing higher internet connectivity for computer systems, and crews are not well trained for cyber attacks and general complacency in ship security, leaving ships vulnerable to attacks.
